"There is a monster flying around Sidwell"
The book Nightbird takes places in Sidwell, Massachussetts (Berkshire County). Sidwell is known for the "Sidwell Monster" which I will talk about later, but any way...
Twig Fowler, the main character is a quiet girl who keeps to herself and has no friends (until Julia) because of her family secret.
A long time ago, a witch named Agnes Early and Twig's 'four-times-great-grandfather' fell in love. Agnes's parents thought she was too young to get married and the American Revolution had started. The year was 1775, her family was from England, and they were loyal to the king. But the Fowlers were American and had joined George Washington to fight the king. Their families were enemies and they were not allowed to see each other anymore. So they made a secret plan to meet by the lake and run away to Boston so they can be married. But he did not come. Agnus said, "Let him fly even faster from me if that's what he desires! Let him have wings!"
So Agnus cast a spell on the Fowler's so that all the men in their family would be born with wings. Agnus lived in the cottage next door and Twig is forbidden to go there by her mother.
But when, a nice girl named Julia moves into that same cottage, everything is different.
Like I said, Sidwell is known for the "Sidwell Monster" At the Sidwell Gas Station and General store people can buy T-shirts with a red-eyed winged beast that says "Visit Sidwell" on the bottom. Clothes hanging on a clothing line seem to vanish. The pies sitting on Twigs counter are there one minute and the next they are gone. Twig left and old quilt on the porch and then it disappeared. So as you can see, the Sidwell monster likes to steal things.
Twig's mother has also forbidden her to play with and talk with them. But, "Julia might be her first true friend, and with her help, they may be able to break the ancient curse."
